My Hopes & Fears

I created this piece when I was 17, imagining my hopes and fears for the next ten years. As a senior in high school, I hoped to build a successful career and grow into someone more sophisticated, intelligent, and worldly, represented by the newspaper cocoon. The possum represents my fear of becoming isolated and disconnected from the world. Growing up, my dad always told me I slept too much, and somehow I decided I didn’t want to end up like a possum. Fun fact: I scanned my own hair on a copy machine to create this image. You can even see the red streak I had at the time.
